Vappu, or May Day, is one of Finland’s biggest and most vibrant celebrations, especially among students! Held on April 30th and May 1st, it marks the arrival of spring with a mix of traditions, parties, and gatherings nationwide. The festivities are filled with long-standing traditions, a sea of colourful student overalls, and the iconic white student caps, which symbolise academic achievement and bring people together across generations. Students and locals come together for picnics, parades, and festivities that last from day to night.
At many universities, vappu isn’t just a two-day event, it kicks off even weeks in advance, with student activities starting as early as March! Learn more about Haaga-Helia’s student traditions below.
In Helsinki, one of the most famous traditions is Mantan lakitus on April 30th, where the Havis Amanda statue is ceremonially “capped” with a giant student cap while crowds cheer and welcome the start of Vappu Eve. The celebration continues into the night with parties and gatherings all over the city.
On May 1st, the festivities move to Kaivopuisto, where thousands of people gather for traditional Vappu picnics. Friends, families, and students fill the park with blankets, sparkling wine, sima (mead), munkki (doughnut), and live music, creating a joyful and festive atmosphere that lasts all day.
At Haaga-Helia, Vappu isn’t just a one-day celebration, it’s an entire experience! The highlight of the student festivities is Helga’s 8 Day May Day, a two-week-long series of events filled with exciting traditions, parties, and activities leading up to the big day.
Organised by Helga, Haaga-Helia’s student union, together with the student associations, like ESN Haaga-Helia, the event brings together students from all campuses to celebrate Vappu in true student spirit. Each day features a new activity, from pub crawls and outdoor games to themed parties and community gatherings. It’s the perfect chance to bond with fellow students, show off your colorful overalls, and fully embrace the Vappu atmosphere.
Students can also collect stamps in their Vappu Pass by attending the different events. Earning six stamps gets you a special Vappu patch, while the most dedicated Vappu goers who complete all events will be rewarded with an official diploma. So get your pass, join the fun, and make this Vappu one to remember!
As part of Helga’s 8 Day May Day, ESN Haaga-Helia hosts Operation Suomenlinna together with ESN Uni Helsinki, one of the most exciting and unique events of the Vappu season! This legendary adventure takes students on a day trip to the historic Suomenlinna sea fortress, combining exploration, fun challenges, and an unforgettable Vappu atmosphere.
